In the spring of 1871, my great-great-grandfather Kao Chih-kuei opened a fabric dyeing shop called I-Mei at Daqiaotou in what is now the Datong District of Taipei. In 1875 his third son Kao Chih-chiao (my greatgrandfather),joined the family business as an assistant. The company flourished and the Kaos lived well until 1884 when France sent troops to attack the port of Tamsui. It was a time of anxiety and uneasiness, and it became much more difficult to run a business; still the family managed to keep its shop going.

Kao Chih-kuei passed away in the eighth month of the lunar calendar in 1894, and in the following year Japanese troops occupied Taiwan. Times were hard once more, and the family struggled to keep the shop open. By 1905,however, the situation became hopeless, and Kao Chihchiao made the difficult decision to shutter the dyeing shop after 30 years of doing business.

In early 1934, my grandfather Kao Fan-wang and my grandmother Chen Hsiu-ying opened a bakery on a site that had previously been Daan Hospital, run by Chiang Wei-shui, the founder of the Taiwan Cultural Association. Casting around for a name for the bakery, Kao Fan-wang suddenly thought of Kao Chih-kuei and his I-Mei fabric dyeing shop. The bakery opened on March 30 (the 16th day of the second month of the lunar year) under the name I-Mei Store; the predecessor of today's I-Mei Foods.

My father Kao Teng-chiao took over the business at the age of 16 on November 21, 1937, after his grandfather passed away, working with my grandmother, aunts and uncles to expand the business. In the nearly 76 years since that day, the family has grown the I-Mei brand and won the loyalty of consumers at home and abroad for its products and service. My father devoted his life to I-Mei, working tirelessly until September 6, 2010, when he passed away serenely early in the morning as he readied to go to work. In his 89-year journey he gave the very best of his intellectual and physical capabilities to I-Mei, striving at the same time for issues like social justice and environmental protection and always providing the best in service for I-Mei's customers and for the people of Taiwan.
